OUR TOWN - ZAWIERCIE
Zawiercie is situated on the Kraków - Wieluń Upland (Jura Krakowsko - Częstochowska) north-eastern part of Upper Silesia. 43 km from Katowice, 45 km from Częstochowa, and 67 km from Cracow. Generally we are in the south of Poland.
Zawiercie is a young town, it is only 80 years old, however one of its parts - Kromołów - is 800 years old. We have found however that the first trace of Zawiercie, just the name, comes from 1431.
It is because the Warta River starts in Kromołów and there was probably a little settlement located behind the Warta River, so Zawiercie means a place behind it.
Now a part of the town and the area behind Zawiercie belongs to a national park 'ORLE GNIAZDA' (EAGLES NETS). It preserves a unique scenery, picturesque for its lime island mountains and karst.
Zawiercie surrounding is very attractive for tourists and holidaymakers.
Along the 'Orle Gniazda' route you may not find eagles but plenty of OLD CASTLE RUINS. They were brave warriors' settlements, the eagles. Most of the ruins you may visit, some of them prepare for you various surprises. Famous Polish historical films were filmed here due to their historical value.
There are yearly festivals of fireworks and light (one of the biggest in Europe) in Olsztyn, near Częstochowa.
In Podzamcze - Ogrodzieniec every year you may join a KNIGHTLY TOUNAMENT, one of very few in Poland. In summer every weekend something exciting takes place in the courtyard of Podzamcze.
For those who like more active rest, there are kilometres of BIKING tracks, bike hire shops, many STABLES with various horses and climbing centre. In nearby villages there are MOUNTAIN CLIMBING SCHOOLS and shops with modern equipment. Hotels, motels and farmers offer rooms in various standards.
